How to insert correct multiplication symbol(×) in Word

Multiplication sign in Ms Word

If you type math in Ms Word regularly, then there are very high changes that you might need to insert Multiplication sign. The multiplication sign thats in keyboard denoted by asterisk (*) is not the correct sign for Multiplication in Math, and you need to insert the correct one i.e. ×.

I have covered the four different ways to insert correct multiplication symbol in Ms Word here. Knowing the one which is easy to remember and efficient is is sufficient for rest of the life.

Best way to type multiplication symbol

Simply type \times and hit space to get × symbol.

This method works only inside equation editor by default. However, using the following one time setting, it can be made to work outside Equation editor too.

To enable Math Autocorrect outside Equation Editor, follow these steps;

  • Click Files → Options to open Word Options
  • Navigate to Proofing and click AutoCorrect Options button to open Auto Correct window
  • Navigate to Math Autocorrect tab
  • Check the box against Use Math Autocorrect options outside Math region
  • Click Ok and close all the dialogue boxed.
